ModelPlan 191
Peter Matthews'
Foden Steam Wagon
The Foden Steam Wagon was the first, the longest-lived, and by far the best of the “Over” types - those in which the engine was mounted over a horizontal boiler. They were a common sight until after the First World War. Drive to the rear wheels and steering was by chain.
The detail and realism in the model, built almost entirely from standard parts, is exquisite. Powered by a concealed MO motor, it features working valve gear, chain drive and steering, articulated suspension, differential and a powered winch and tipping gear.
The plan contains photographs, parts list and background information. The constructional details, illustrated throughout with IsoMec drawings, are very clear and easy to follow.

Philip Webb's
Building Site Tower Crane
Only slightly larger than the author's ever-popular 1990 Tower Crane, ModelPlan 61, the new model, based on a Liebherr original, enjoys radical improvements in detail and handling, with all motors now boom-mounted and a hoist rope which follows the complex prototypical path. The mast bearing uses commonly-available large axle system parts, with an alternative pintle-bearing using only standard Meccano. A few non-system extras add finishing touches to the model's extraordinary realism, which has been achieved with an elegant economy of parts.
Building instructions are illustrated throughout with photographs and IsoMec drawings.

Tony James'
Demountable Body Tipper Lorry
A Set 10 Model
The steering is correctly geared and operated with string, while both axles have leaf spring suspension.
The hydraulic tipping and sliding mechanism used to tip or unload the body are driven from the motor using cord and screwed rod. The internal gearbox attached to the motor is set at a ratio of 6:1 and operates well on only a 7.2v battery pack.
The detachable body has a hinged tailboard that will either drop down for ground level loading or swing upwards for tipping the load. To tip the body, the cord operated twin rams are used and to demount the body, it is moved rearwards first by a screwed rod.
16 pages including colour photographs and parts list, plus a separately-stapled 12-page booklet of diagrams.

Mike Edkins'
Descending Pendulum Clock
In this novel clock, the driving weight also serves as the pendulum. The mechanism is in essence very simple; from the great wheel of the fusee to the escape wheel is a step-up gear ratio, as in a normal clock.
The anchor of the escapement is positioned below the escape wheel and fitted with a crutch as normal. As the line supporting the weight unwinds from the fusee, it is taken around a pulley directly below; this drives the hour and minute hands. The line is then taken upwards and routed over pulleys, for it then to descend between two rollers (the pendulum suspension point) and the forks of the pendulum crutch, and then is attached to the driving weight/pendulum. As the line unwinds from the fusee, the length of the pendulum increases, slowing the rate the pendulum beats; the fusee compensates for this by letting off the line at constant rate so that the motion work pulley rotates at a constant speed, allowing the hands of the clock to display the correct time.
24 pages including 26 colour photographs and parts list, plus a separately-stapled booklet of isometric diagrams.
