Coal Loader

Designed by Brian Compton

Rebuilt and Described by Roger Marriott

The model automatically follows a sequence of operations in which two coal wagons are loaded, in turn, by a conveyor picking up coal from a reservoir.  Once loaded the trucks are  pulled by the locomotive to the unloading drum which rotates discharging the coal into a chute re-filling the reservoir.  The trucks are then reloaded and the sequence of operations is repeated.  These operations are controlled electronically by a microprocessor using Picaxe software ensuring precise sequencing and positioning of the trucks.

The model requires a modest collection of Meccano parts and additional components including three motors, magnetic switches and the Picaxe software plus microprocessor components (these can be purchased from suppliers online).

The control program to operate the model and accompanying software are  on a CD included with the ModelPlan, which describes how to build the model, how to set up the microprocessor and load the software.  The CD also contains full-resolution image files of the photographs.

24 pages including text, colour photographs, parts list and CD.
