Saxtead Mill

Model Index

Built: 1986 A working demonstration of a 19th C English post mill

An E20R in the body powered the sails, the fantail and the tail-ladder wheels, the latter via an auto-reversing gearbox.

The mill body turned on a "heel post" bearing - the post passed through the roof of the "house" resting on a ball at the bottom. Lateral thrust was resisted by rubber rings on 1" pulleys running round the inside of a 5½" Circular Girder fixed to the roof.

The sails were fixed to a bevel gear held in a socket coupling on the end of the windshaft.

The picture on the right shows Saxtead Mill "and family" - ever-decreasing scale replicas of itself.

Builder's comment:  My first attempt at a scale model.  Bert Love liked it!
